Dairy, dairy quite contrary
Well kids, what’s the latest on dairy these days? Chances are if you are consuming too much that isn’t a good thing. If your dairy product has added hormones or any added nutrients, such as being enriched with vitamin D, calcium or omegas, this usually means that the product has been overly processed. Dairy products can interfere with the absorption of magnesium, which may explain stomach cramps or diarrhea. Magnesium stabilizes glucose metabolism, so if you’re feeling a little moo-dy, dairy could be a reason.
There is typically high sodium in dairy products, which may cause water retention and bloating. The high saturated fat content can be hard on the liver too. And let’s not forget the tryptophan in cow’s milk, which can increase fatigue. Dairy can especially interfere with women’s hormones and can create a lot of discomfort during your cycles. Also, it’s going to be a heavy sinus season so you may want to cut down on the dairy products to breathe better. Dairy products can cause throat issues too.
Here are a few ideas and alternatives to moon-over:
• Choose organic dairy products without hormones and additives and low in sugar and sodium.
• Use smaller amounts of cow’s milk products.
• Try using kefir, nut milks, coconut, soy, goat, hemp or other lactose-free milks. Be aware of added sugars and gluten ingredients (natural flavors, modified starches, rice and malt syrups) in these as well. Soy and other nut milks may contain tree nuts that can be allergens.
• When cooking, try using a mashed banana and a beaten egg white until
stiff for whipped cream. Use kefir instead of buttermilk. Or golden flax oil instead of butter. Use a teaspoon of baking powder to replace each egg. Use silken tofu or soak chia seeds in non-dairy milk until it thickens, then refrigerate for a yogurt alternative.
To make nut milk:
• 1/2 c. blanched almonds or nuts
of your choice
• 1 Tbsp. honey
• 1 c. warm water
Combine ingredients with 1/2 cup of the warm water in a blender. Add the remaining water slowly and blend until creamy. For thinner milk add 1 to 3 ounces of warm water.
Sinus pressure relief
Try this simple acupressure technique for sinus pressure relief: take your middle fingers and press gently on the cheek bones just outside of your nostrils. Press and hold for about a minute. Perform throughout the day or whenever you feel heavy pressure.
